There are many parasites that can pose a problem for your pet.
A few of them are:

worms.jpgInternal

  • Coccidia
  • Tapeworm
  • Roundworm
  • Hookworm
  • Whipworm
  • Giardia

External

  • Earmites
  • Fleas
  • Ticks
  • Lice

A few of these can also infect humans. Zoonotic diseases are diseases that are transmitted from animals to humans. These parasites can be contracted by accidental ingestion or penetrating through the skin. A common way for exposure can be through sandboxes and gardening. Dogs and cats defecate in the soil or sand and then we come in contact with it.

You can prevent these parasites from becoming a health concern for you and your pet by cleaning up after your pet regularly. Administering monthly parasite prevention to your pet is also a good way to decrease your risk. Covering sandboxes and wearing gloves while gardening can prevent exposure as well. And be sure to wash your hands regularly!

At your  pet's annual Wellness Exam, your veterinarian will discuss with you how to provide protection to your pet for these parasites.  There are many easy once monthly applications which can be given, so make sure you ask which one would be most suitable for you and your pet.

Testimonial

I wanted to thank you again for your help last Friday. There are many animals on my farm. I love them all but I was particularly fond of little Gabby. It was only a couple weeks ago we saw her rolling in the dirt and so delighted with herself and I remember how she loved to lay on Jeff's chair and bat the tail of our other cat as she walked by. I had hoped she could have experienced more of these joys in her life.
Your skill in diagnosing and presenting her case and your compassion in helping me understand what was best for Gabby was very much appreciated.
